Double birthdays--Toby's FIRST in a Family!!

Crazy happy to have him HOME for our birthday!!!
What a joy it was to celebrate this year TOGETHER with Toby!!
As you probably know, we have the very same birthday, August 13th! That was one of the "God winks" that helped confirm that he was indeed our son.
Last year, we did a fundraiser...an effort to find 42 people who might consider giving $42 in honor of my 40th and Toby's 2nd birthday. But guess what?!?!?! Instead of raising the hoped-for $1,764 that is 42 X $42...YOU AMAZING FRIENDS AND FAMILY gave over $8,000 for our birthdays!!!!
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!
You guys are truly amazing. We even had gifts for our birthday from as far away as SINGAPORE!!!
Astonishing.
And now, that precious orphan is now home. And he's our son. And it was his birthday. His first ever to be celebrated in a family. His first ever in a home. His first ever with cake and ice cream. His first ever presents.
And my my did he like it!!!

This is the cake I made him...with his beloved "Bu Ow" (pronounced BOO-ow) that he got from his very first emergency room trip. Yah, that IS kinda funny huh?

With the actual stuffed dog toy that inspired the cake.

Opening gifts was especially fun!

This is the moment he realized what it was--AIRPLANE!!

Anneli steals a kiss with kitten Mitzi Moo.

Just being a teenager. ;)

With his new guitar!!! Happy boy!

I ADORE the wonderful way that Zeb held back...not stealing his brother's new toys away and actually handed some of the pieces for him to play with...what a FABULOUS brother!!

Afterwards we were invited outside to watch the BIKE SHOW!!! :)

Lovely announcer Jensi presented each bike rider...

The amazing Darrah Kate!! (Note her standing UP riding trick!!)

Here comes....Zareb the maestro!

This trick is called, "Super high wheelie!"

AND NOW....the STAR of our show:

OLIVER!!!

Look at that balance, folks!!
(Anneli's role was to cue kids for their parts from the garage)

Seriously?!? I never knew he could do this!!! (and i love his tongue out!)

Not to be outdone by her older brother, DQ is riding with her left hand OFF the handle!!!

It was a really wonderful celebration!!! And if all this wasn't enough...Brian got a picture of the kids with me!! (...and the miracle was that only ONE shot was snapped!! They actually ALL SMILED IN ONE FRAME!!!)
Thanks for sharing my birthday, Toby. You absolutely bless my life so much. Rock on!!

Book It for Baby!

Time for a FRESH NEW FUNDRAISER!!!

Why???

To bring this now BIGGER boy home to our family!

(Can you believe how different he looks than that little boy in the crib in the sidebar?!?! Me neither!!)

Anyway, back to the goods!

We have the fabulous opportunity to earn funds for bringing Toby home by hosting an Usborne Book Party!!

Yayyyyy!!!! (the crowd goes wild!)

I have a history of home schooling. Not a long history, about 2 years is all actually. But during that time we bought many Usborne books because they are SO WONDERFUL and full of awesomely colored pages and information that our kids gobbled up. These books are so wonderful that Sonlight curriculum uses volumes of them in their Core curriculums. So when my friend offered to hold a party with these same books to help bring The Tobster home, well, let's just say I JUMPED UP AND DOWN!!

Just to throw a little marketing your way, here is what they about their books:
Usborne and Kane Miller books are the most exciting, engaging and educational books on the market today. They are high quality, innovative, lavishly-illustrated and best of all they are the books kids love to read. Choose from almost 2,000 bright colorful and fun titles covering a wide variety of subjects.

And I agree!! My kids POUR over these books!!!

I went around our house just collecting the Usborne titles we have loved over the years and this is what I've come up with:

Most of our titles are science and history related, but clearly Usborne has fiction and other books too! ;)

So what do our mommy-minds think about after we've put our kiddos back on the school bus and kicked off the school year?

Christmas!

(Stop rolling your eyes, you KNOW it's coming in just 4 months, don't you???)

We also have birthdays in between now and then too!

So here's what I'm thinking. Let's all get AHEAD this year. Consider gifting your beloved ones with books! I can attest to all FIVE of our children pouring over these books for HOURS at a time!

If you choose to do this, you have the joint pleasure knowing that your purchases have helped bring our little Toby-man home!! Twenty-five percent of your purchase will be deposited into Toby's adoption fund. Plus, the more people buy Toby will earn free welcome home books! How cool is THAT?!? I absolutely cannot WAIT to hold him and read to him!!

Follow this linky-dink to shop! Click me! Just to be sure your purchase helps Toby, please select "Amy Shaw" under "choose your event" (never knew I was an event before, haha!) before you proceed to shop.

Awesome!

Your Christmas can benefit Imprisoned Children!!!

I have been chomping at the bit to be able to finally blog about these ideas...it's finally come together and I get to put it out there!

Remember this post? I ended up being a tad bit early with it...but maybe now it will whet your appetite! :)

I am so so so excited to share in the project Sixty Feet has underway!! If you are new reader, Sixty Feet is a group of Jesus-loving, Scripture-doing people who learned about imprisoned children in Uganda and are working alongside the government to encourage, love and bless the inmates.

The exciting matching program was announced on their blog site a few weeks back. I learned about this and wondered "what can we offer in a tangible way so that people would want to give to Sixty Feet for Christmas?"

That lead me here.

But before I get to the "goods" I want to just remind you of the sweet children we are talking about here. There are 6 remand homes in Uganda. They vary in location, resources, staff, age of children and level of incarceration. Many of the children are refugees from neighboring nations, are orphans, are street kids sent to beg and are picked up by the police or were sent there by their own parents because they simply didn't know what else to do.

Putting a face to the children:
He was the sweetest thing! I got a smile after I showed him his picture on the back of my camera!

These children live in a place that looks like this:

The big announcement that Sixty Feet made can be read here. In a nutshell, they have been given permission to remove some of the youngest, most vulnerable children from M. They have identified some land (right on the shores of Lake Victoria!) and have been saving $30,000 for the purchase. Someone recently offered them a gift of $60,000 if they can have other donors match that amount! Altogether, if the other $60,000 is raised Sixty Feet will have $150,000 to use to buy the land, build a home where these children can receive love, nourishment, counseling and be free. WOW!

Isn't that a noble cause?

I sure think so!

The matching offer is good through December 31, 2011.

So here is how this is going to work. Christmas is coming. You buy gifts. But you know now about these most precious souls on the continent of Africa who are in desperate need. How can you possibly combine both?

I've got three ideas for you.

1) Give toward the $60,000 in the name of the person you are giving to. Present them with a paper that explains where their gift went and how it will positively impact the children of Uganda. This gift educates too! You can get awesome information from the Sixty Feet website.

2) Donate at least $30 toward the $60,000 and receive a free Sixty Feet t shirt! They are made by the Wild Olive Tees company and are absolutely awesome! Soft and comfy. Another great way to show your support and get into conversations about the children and this project! P.S. Women's shirts are fitted, order UP one size! ;) Click here to get your awesome T shirt for those you love!

3) Order a DIY Christmas gift for $15. 100% of this donation will go toward the land purchase! In return, you will receive a digital file for an 11x14 size print of the "Family Rules" that were blogged on Sixty Feet's director's blog. You can read the original post here. Click here to see the different styles and colors to choose from. After you select your style and color, you will have full printing rights. You can put this on mugs, plates, puzzles, canvas (that's what we did!), t shirts, or just as a photo and frame it. Let your creative juices flow! You can have whatever name you choose for the Rules, so it would make a lovely gift! Click HERE to order yours! :)

Here is how cool it can look in your house! :) (Note: this is in our newly redone mudroom--yay!!)

Once you've read this, please please share this with all your friends!
You can:

The March of Birthdays...

I am so blessed. I have TWO delightful daughters both born in March.

Often we combine their parties into one...this year, it was a wee bit different.

For Anneli's birthday, we took the whole family to CHICAGO!!!

We rode the train in from Wheaton...an experience that Oliver is STILL talking about! What fun! And we sat up on the top level! Yippie!

Choo choo!

First stop...the AMERICAN GIRL store! :) (A long time dream of hers to go there!) She was delighted to find out that her grandparents had called ahead and prepared gift cards to the store! She looked carefully and decided to buy Kanani, the new Hawaiian girl of the year!

Next stop, Gino's East Pizzeria!
Time for these kids to have some genuine Chicago style deep dish!! We were so lucky, we avoided all lines and just walked in! Still had the HOUR to wait while they cooked our pizza...

So everyone found things to do!

Reading her new book about her Kanani doll

Oliver and Daddy and DQ had gone to the Lego store while the older girls and I were playing at the AG store. This gave Olly something to play with while we waited for PIZZA!

We're so cute!
           And then...

THE PIZZA CAME!

Anneli got to a booth before another diner did!

And one of the best parts about
Gino's East is being able to
 leave your mark!!

Jensi found a place on a support beam to leave her name.

I don't think he is left-handed...but maybe only for graffiti!

And finally I did this for ALL of us:

We visited a few more places...but the longer the day wore on, the fussier sweet little Darrah Kate got.
At the Bean in Millennium Park...in the wind and snow. Love Anneli's stoic pose. And Oliver's new Disney friend.

The next day, we went to my alma mater, Wheaton College!

And then discovered the Billy Graham Museum was OPEN! We HAD to take the kids there...
Standing at Billy Graham's preaching podium!

Jensi and my college friend's daughter pose with Billy

The heart of Billy's message etched in a big stone wall and lit up!

All the kids together!
And this is too cute to not show you:
Darrah Kate and Lillian...both kinda sorta 2 years old :)

Cake time!

A gymnast cake for my girl who spends most of her life upside down!

Her candle has bites out of it. Yes, Darrah Kate struck again!

And Jensi's ipod cake:

ELEVEN candles...oh my!

Surprise and excitement over Matthew West concert tickets for NEXT WEEK! :)
ipod cake with her favorite artist and song!

Birthdays in March...a fun time for everyone! Happy birthday to two of my favorite people on the planet!
